A peek through the scope at the new Goldeneye 007

Wii owners do have one upcoming title to lord over the other systems, and that’s Eurocom’s upcoming Goldeneye 007. The closest thing to call it is a “remake” of the classic 1997 N64 game, since it’s not exactly a sequel and nowhere near a port. The game’s being updated to include Daniel Craig as Bond, along with a new story by the film’s original writer. This may be one of the games where it’ll be useful to have a Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro to recreate the original N64 control scheme. Players will also have the option of using a GameCube controller, Wii Zapper, or Wii Remote with Nunchuk. The best part is that in multiplayer (with up to four players) each player will be able to choose the scheme that fits them best. One of the most noticeable enhancements to players who remember the first is the new destructible environments, making it possible to destroy bridges and the like in order to take out enemies. The downside? They can do the same to you. Aside from shooting with the 25 confirmed weapons in the title, you’ll have to use your espionage skills to get the drop on unsuspecting baddies.Of course, the draw of the original Goldeneye was its deathmatch mode, and the new title doesn’t look to disappoint. Familiar villains like Jaws, Scaramanga, and Oddjob will be back, along with specialized melee attacks. Online gameplay will obviously open up the game’s potential to those without enough controllers (or enough friends) to make the split-screen mode viable. The new maps also drastically change the game’s style around, offering many more hiding places for rogue agents than in the original. If you have fond memories of the N64 title, are a new Bond fan who missed the first one, or are just in the mood for a great shooter, it’s looking like Goldeneye 007 could be your cup of tea.
